preliminary task
For the preliminary task, I was asked to create a front page and contents page of a school magazine which featured a medium close up shot of a student that I had photographed myself and it must have an appropriate layout of text and a masthead. Before I started, I looked at some examples of school magazines from the internet. This gave me inspiration on how I wanted my magazine to look like and understand the layout so that it looks efficient and professional. The benefits of doing the preliminary task, is that I have now got more of a knowledge about Adobe Photoshop and understand how my magazine can improve when doing it for the final product. Once I had done my research, I went onto Photoshop and produced my magazine cover and contents page. Using Photoshop for the first time was quite hard as I could not find and understand the different tools. The tools that are available are very difficult to use at first as they require previous experience and I had not used this software before.
task 1- school magazines
In this task, I was asked to analyse my school magazine front cover that I had previously created for my preliminary task and I also decided to analyse a real school magazine. I used the codes and conventions to analyse the magazines to see what has been included and where it could have been improved. I found analysing the other real magazine helpful as I could see where I could improve and how I could make my final magazine look more professional. When doing my final product I will now know what to do to make it look more authentic and skilful.
Codes and conventions of a magazine cover
|
I decided to create a presentation that will discuss the codes and conventions of a magazine cover. I found doing this very useful and helpful as I now have a better understanding on what can be found on a magazine cover. It also helped me to understand the different meanings of each of the words that I did not know beforehand. Having done this, I will now be able to use these ideas in my final piece and make the magazine look more professional and effective. I decided to present this task with a programme called ‘Prezi’, this is a very fun and creative way of helping me learn the different terms and the programme has a feeling of interaction with the user.

Task 2- music magazines
In this task, I was asked to analyse a variety of different genre music magazine covers. I analysed 4 different magazine covers from a variety of genres, they are: Pop, Rap, Rock and Indie. I analysed these magazines as they are the most popular and most likely genres I would do for my final product. From doing this task, I was able to get more of an understanding on each of the genres and how they were presented through, colour, layout and the conventions used in each magazine. It also gave me an idea as to what genre I could use for my final magazine and how that genre is presented through a magazine cover.
Task 3- Mood boards
In this task, I created mood boards to present different music genres. I chose to do the genres of: Rock, Pop, Rap and Indie. I decided on these genres as I want to do either one of them for my final product, so I thought by doing a mood board on each it would be able to help me pick what genre is the best for me. I created all of my mood boards on Adobe Fireworks as I find it easier to use and compose my mood boards to the way I wanted them. I found using this programme easy to use as I had previously used it and I know and understand how to use the different tools provided. From looking and researching the different genres shown in my mood boards, I now know that I want to do my final magazine on the genre of Pop. I chose this genre as I enjoy this music and have a better knowledge about it than any other music type.
Rock- For my first mood board, I decided to base it around the Rock genre. When forming my mood board, I noticed that many of the images have very dark colours, these colours are generally black, white and red. This colour scheme is stereotypically associated with this genre, so having it on the magazine cover will show the customers what type of music magazine it is going to be about before buying or reading.
Pop- For my second mood board, I created it around the genre of Pop music. I chose this genre as it is the one that I am most interested in and it relates to the younger generation. I thought that this would be good as I am of this audience, helping me have personal opinion. Along with that, I found it fun finding pictures and was keen in learning more about the genre. I found pictures of famous artists, magazine cover and artists albums that fitted with this genre. When constructing my mood board, I found that the colours used in this genre are bright, fun and vibrant. This would help the magazine engage and catch the attention of the target audience as the colours are bold and stand out.
Rap/ Hip Hop- The final mood board, I decided to create it around the genre of Hip Hop/ Rap. On the mood board, I used many different images, they consist of artists, album cover and music magazines. I also used pictures of stereotypical items associated with Rap music. When creating this mood board, I noticed that the colours used in the genre is mainly dark and bold colours, this being black, white and red. Additionally, I noticed that many of the artists on the magazine covers that are included within this genre are of a certain ethnic group, showing that they dominate this genre of music.
Task 4- Inspiration from real media
In this task, I had to look at real media, that wasn’t just from magazines, to help me get inspiration for the Pop genre. I decided to analyse two magazine covers to see what real music magazine covers look like, so I can get a better knowledge on the layout, images, colour, language used. Also, I analysed a music video as I thought this would give me help on ideas for my magazine. The different aspects in a music video can help me with my magazine as I will be able to get inspiration from different ideas used, for example the colours used throughout the video and the location, setting of the video.

instagram posts
While I was on social media (Instagram), I looked at pop magazine Instagram accounts. I came across pictures of famous musicians such as Calvin Harris, Zayn and Ed Sheeran, as they featured on the front of the magazine covers. They have all used their Instagram accounts to promote the magazine, Calvin Harris and Ed Sheeran have 7.9 million followers, whereas Zayn has 20 million followers. For them doing this, the magazine would have got a lot of interests from the musician’s fans and they may have purchased this magazine because of who it featured. This shows that the main image on a magazine is very important and it needs to be eye-catching and have a very well known artist on the cover so that people would be interested in purchasing the magazine and reading it.
Having found this has given me inspiration on the colours, layout and images that I should use in my magazine. The colours scheme used in the Ed Sheeran magazine were white, black and orange. The magazine emphasises the colour orange as of his hair colour as this is a very recognisable trait that Ed Sheeran has. The magazine with Calvin Harris uses colours such as white, bronze, black and green. For the magazine with Zayn, the main colours used are black, white and grey, as these are the main colours Zayn uses in his pictures and album covers. The fonts and layouts used on each of the magazine covers are very similar, showing consistency within the brand, this helps make the magazine easily recognised by the readers.

task 5- initial ideas
In this task, I explained and produced my initial ideas for my magazine. I had to answer some questions to help me understand what I need wanted my magazine to look like. However, these are my initial ideas so they may change as I get further through my research and planning. I chose to produce this task in a mind map as I have not done this yet and I think it clearly shows my ideas about what I want to do.
task 6- 25 word pitch
In this task, I need to present 25 words that would represent my magazine. In order to do this, I used my iPhone camera and a feature called 'Time Lapse'. This feature uses the video and speeds it up, so my writing was speed up to look, intense and creative. I chose to present my 25 Word Pitch in this way as it was different to what I have done before and is a creative way of showing a range of ICT. When writing my word pitch, I decided to change the colours for each word as the Pop genre is presented in a colourful way so I wanted to show this through my video.
task 7- target audience research
In this task, I had to plan research about my target audience so that it will help me when I create my own magazine. I chose 2 methods of how to collect the data. The first method I chose to collect my research is through social media and text messages. I chose this method as the target audience for my magazine was teenagers and young adults and this age range are known for using social media and texting to message each other, so I thought it would be an effective and different way of collecting data. The second method I chose to collect data was through an online survey. I chose this method for similar reason to the other method, this being that my target audience mainly use the internet on a daily basis. Also, using an online survey will make it easier for people to answer, so I can get correct and more data, helping me get the best information possible.
1. Which of the four quadrant(s) would your magazine appeal to?
From the research I have done, I think that my Pop magazine would appeal to younger males and females, even though the this genre appeals to a wider and variety of people from different ages. However, I think that the Pop genre is mainly aimed at young women, younger than 25. I found this as large amounts of young teenager females enjoy this genre of music, but also like the artists within this genre. A current magazine that is mainly aimed at young teenager girls is, ‘We Love Pop’. The magazines includes the latest gossip, fashion and boy artists. I thought this magazine was targeted at specifically teenage girls as the main colours on the cover are bright pinks, purples, blues, reds and yellows. The magazine also includes freebies, such as calendars, nail stickers, lip balm and makeup palettes, these free items are more likely to be wanted my young girls, maybe from 10-13. From this research, I found out that the colour scheme of a magazine targets certain age groups and also if there are freebies, these show what type of gender and age you want to buy your magazine.
I decided to aim my magazine at both genders instead of the typical female magazines as the magazine will then be targeted at a wider audience. I want the magazine to include features that both genders can enjoy, to help attract a bigger target market. I think that my magazine would appeal to a large, mainstream readers as the Pop genre is one of the most popular genres of music so is enjoyed by many people.
2. What is the target audience for the magazines you looked at when looking at influences?
In task 4, I looked at the ‘Billboard’ magazines to get some inspiration for my own magazine. I looked at two different types of magazines, they were both very different by the use of colours, fonts and the main image. Genres that are more associated with males is Rap and Hip-Hop, whereas Pop is associated more with females. From the two magazine covers, I noticed from one of them, the colours used were very bright and the female artist had colourful flowers around her clothing, attracting the audience of females. When looking on the internet at Billboard magazines with males artists, the colours used were very bold, such as blue, white, red and black. Looking at these magazines helped me gain ideas for my own magazine as they presented different ways of including both genders in a magazine. When there is a male artist on the cover of a magazine, the colours used are dark and bolder, whereas this is different to when a female in on the front of a cover. Now that I have looked at different magazines that are aimed at different genders will help with producing my magazine as it is aimed at both genders.
3. Are there any other audience groups that your magazine may appeal to?
I want my magazine to appeal to people that enjoy the Pop genre. I will include articles that are suitable for both male and females and aimed at the age range of teenagers and young adults. However, it may also aim to anybody that enjoys the genre and of an older or younger age. I will include images and advertisement that is suitable for the all different age ranges and will interest both females and males. The main image, artist, I have used is of the target age range so it may not appeal as much to an older audience because of the artist being a younger age, however they may be interested in the advertisements and articles within the magazine.
4. What different 'tribes' of youth may be especially interested in your magazine?
To be able to answer this question, I did dome research on a website called: http://www.uktribes.com. I found that the tribe of youth that would be interested in my magazine is are mainstream audience. The mainstream ‘tribe’ is formed as the backbone of tribal society. This is where most young people start out in music and some never leave. Mainstream ‘tribes' prefer to stick to what is safe, rather than listening to a different type of music. They are also more happy with ready available 'high street' influences. They enjoy the type of music that Capital FM, Radio One and Kiss produce. I think the Pop genre is the most common tribe, meaning that more people will be interested in my magazine because it is the most popular genre of music. Overall, I think that the mainstream 'tribe’ will be interested in my magazine as the Pop genre fits with this group of people more.
5. Would your magazine be limited to a UK audience or might it have a global appeal?
My magazine could have a global appeal, but I think it would depend on the response when sold in the UK. My magazine would have an audience globally as the Pop genre is very popular worldwide. The main audience I think it would appeal to worldwide is the USA as a lot of music is produced here and is very famous and popular, especially the Pop genre.
From the research I have done, I think that my Pop magazine would appeal to younger males and females, even though the this genre appeals to a wider and variety of people from different ages. The main audience I think it would appeal to worldwide is the USA as a lot of music is produced here and is very famous and popular, especially the Pop genre.
The first method being through social media and text messages, was done as my target audience is of the ages where they always use their phone to text their friends and socialise with social media. I chose to ask people that were in the age group that I want to target my magazine to. From this method, I got to see what people in the target age range of my magazine would like to see and enjoy in a magazine that they will purchase. Overall, all the people were in the age group that I will be targeting my magazine to and all mainly enjoyed and listening to Pop music. The price range they would pay for a magazine would be from £1 to £4, this would be because they are young and will not want to be paying large prices for magazines as they will not have a big income. They would all enjoy receiving free samples or discounts with the magazine as a freebie. The ways off attracting them to a magazine is through: the artist on the cover, gossip inside the magazine, information about their favourite celebrities and having bright colours. This showed me that they enjoy reading gossip about artist and celebrities, also that my front cover should consist of an artist to attract a wide audience to my magazine.
In the second method, I made a survey on a website called 'Survey Monkey’, which is where I put the questions together and asked people to to answer them through a link. After collecting the data, I created a graph to show the results in a clear and organised way. From these results, it helped with getting a variety of different ideas for my magazine and understanding on how I can attract and appeal my magazine more to its target audience.
Question 1-
One of my questions was to see the age of people that enjoyed certain genres of music. From this research, I found that many of the people from the ages under 20, enjoy listening to Pop, Rock and Hip Hop. This helped me understand what age range I should aim my magazine to, to get the largest audience.
Question 2-
I asked this question so I could gain information about what genre of music people most enjoy. I found out that the most popular genre was Pop from the people I had interviewed. I had already chosen my genre, which was Pop, so it was beneficial to me as it means that the other questions asked would relate to my magazine. This would help me with ideas for my magazine and will help me attract my appropriate audience.
Question 3-
From the results, I found that most of the people I asked are willing to pay between £1 to £1.99 for a music magazine. Asking this questions helped me understand how much I should sell my magazine for as most of the responses are from people within my target age. Having the magazine cheap will attract the younger audiences attention as they will not have a big income so a cheap magazine will be good for these ages.
Question 4-
One of the questions I asked was to find out what type of freebies the readers will want to receive within the magazine. I found out that the freebies that people would like to receive are CDs and vouchers. This helped me decide on what freebie I should include within my magazine so it can attract a wide audience and the reader will be persuaded to purchase the magazine.
Question 5-
I asked this question to see how often people buy music magazines. I found that half of the people I interviewed had never brought a music magazine before. This showed me that I need to make sure my magazine is well aimed at my target audience so the feel attracted and will purchase the magazine.
Question 6-
This questions was important for me as I was interested in what appealed to people when purchasing a music magazine so I could include into my magazine. There was a variety of different answers, but the main response was the artist that features on the front cover and within the magazine. This revealed to me that I need to include an artist within my magazine so that it will attract my target audience and persuade them to buy the magazine.
Question 7-
I asked this question so I could understand whether my target audience listen and enjoy music. For the people who did not listen to music, it was because they listen to it though others was, for example YouTube and Spotify. Therefore, this question was very successful as it showed me all of the people that answered the survey enjoy and listen to music regularly.
Question 8-
One of the questions I asked was what radio stations they listen to so I could get a better understanding on the genre of music they enjoy. From this, I got to see that most of the people enjoy listening to Capital FM and Kiss. The genre of music that these stations play are chart and pop music. This helped so I now know that I could included this information within my magazine to attract and appeal to the audience.
Question 9-
Even though this question is like the question about the radio and the music stations, I still wanted to ask it as I wanted to know the whether they would also listen to music channels as they also listen to the radio. From this question, I found what genre of music and songs are popular at this moment. The highest results were from YouTube, this implied to me that the type of music could be from any genre. To overcome this within my magazine I will need to cover a variety of Pop music so it will attract the audience and also a larger audience.
Question 10-
The last question I asked was whether my audience red music magazines on the internet. I wanted to find out this as it could have shown that more people read magazines on the internet rather than a paper copy. This question revealed that more people buy their magazines rather than use the internet. This helped my understand that I need to make my magazine eye-catching and appealing when it is the shops so it will easily be seen by readers.
Overall, I think that doing this survey was very beneficial as I have learn’t a lot from it and understand what needs to be put into my magazine. It has helped me consider ideas that will attract my audience and make my magazine as appealing as possible. I now know that I need to include different aspects of Pop and use different conventions in my magazine that will suit the audience I have chosen. task 8- location shots
In this task, I was asked to take photographs of the different locations that I am considering to use as the background for my pictures for my magazine. I have chosen a different mixture of locations so I have a variety of places to chose from, to see what one is the best for my magazine, and whether it fits with the genre. From my research, when looking at other Pop music magazines, I noticed that the background was often plain and only consisted of one colour rather than lots of different details. I think that having it plain and only having one colour makes the magazine look professional and it also makes the magazine stand out and more eye-catching. I also want the background to be plain as I mainly want my audience to focus on the main image and the text.
LOCATION SHOT ONE
Plain Wall
My first location that I decided to use was my dining room. I used my dining room as it has white, plain walls. I could use this as a background as I would easily be able to edit it, change it to different colours and change it to suit the theme of the magazine. Using this locations means that I will not need to travel to take the photographs but they still will look professional. Having a plain background will also make the model stand out more as the audience will be focussing more on the artist than the background. Therefore, I have chosen this as one of my locations to shoot my photographs for the magazine cover.
LOCATION SHOT TWO
Brick Wall
My second location that I decided to use was my brick wall. I used this location as I think it is very plain but will give the magazine an edgy effect. The same as the first shot is that I will be able to access this location whenever I need to take any photographs. Having the artist in front of a brick wall, will be eye-catching for the audience as this isn’t traditionally used on magazine covers, giving the magazine attention from the readers. I think a brick walk would appeal to my target audience as it is edgy and different to any other magazines. For this reason, I have chosen this as a potential location for my photographs.
task 9- casting musicians
In this task, I was asked to cast models for my musicians. I need to find people who will be willing to model and feature in my magazine. I chose a model that is of the age that my target audience is so the magazine will look more interesting and relatable for them. The main image on the front cover is very important as this is the first thing the readers will see and this depends on whether they will buy the magazine. I wanted to make sure that the models are reliable and I will able be to meet when needed.
Musician One:
Emily Fisher
Age: 17
Height: 5ft3
Gender: Female
Eye colour: Blue
Hair colour: Brown
The first person I chose to feature on my magazine cover, is my friend Emily Fisher. Emily is a close friend so when asking her to feature in my magazine she was very positive and confident. She was willing to let me take some of her weekend up to take some casting shots. Therefore, I know that she reliable and we work very well together as she feels comfortable with me taking shots for the magazine. I chose Emily as her age is suitable for the target audience of my magazine as well as having very current and fashionable clothing, making her relatable to the teenagers when looking at the front page. Emily has also got experience in photo shoots as she has done some previously, so she knows what she has to do to get a professional photo.

task 10- colour and costume choices
For the task, I was asked to research colours and costume ideas for the chosen genre, of Pop. To help me understand and get inspired, I designed a mood board of different outfits that Pop artists wear. This will also help me with colour scheme as I will be able to see the different colours that the Pop genre presents through their artists outfit. Creating this mood board has inspired and helped me chose the colours for the magazine and outfits, also the costume ideas I will need my artist to wear so they can portray the genre of Pop.
Costume-
I decided to create a mood board with range of different Pop artists outfits, to give me inspiration on what I should make my artist wear for my magazine. I needed inspiration as I had no ideas on what I should make my artist wear as their costume. So having the mood board gave me a variety of different ideas on what type of costumes the artist should wear to easily represent the Pop genre. From this research, I found that the colours the Pop artist wear are bright and very colourful. This was what I thought because of previous research being that the Pop genre is presented as being bright and vibrant way. This helped me as I now know that my artist will need to wear colours that are brightly coloured costumes so it will represent the Pop genre and appeal and attract the right target audience to my magazine.

From looking at this mood board, it has helped me with my colour scheme for my magazine and the colours to use in the costume of the images I will use. I have learnt that the musician will wear clothes that consist of vibrant colours so they stand out and catch your eyes. I took this into consideration when picking an outfit for my artist as I wanted them to present the Pop genre, and catch the eyes of the readers. For my magazine, I wanted the colours that will show that the magazine appears as the genre of Pop and also attracts the audience of males and females. This would mean I need to chose colours that would attract both males and females.
These are the outfits that I chose for my artist to wear while doing the photoshoot. I thought these costumes would be suitable for my magazine as they are brightly coloured and portray the Pop genre very well. I also thought that these outfits could be worn by the target audience, making the audience feel attracted and appeal to the magazine more.

task 11- layout
In this task, I was asked to show the layout of the front cover, contents page and double page spread for my magazine. From my previous research I understand the different layouts of magazines, but however I need a better understanding on how I will be able to make the design suit the Pop genre and make sure it will target my specific audience. I will design the template ideas of how I want my pages to look like for my magazine.
To get a better understanding, I decided to do a mood board of different front covers, contents page and double page spreads from different music magazines to also give me some inspiration on how my magazine should look. I found doing this mood board very helpful because I knew how a magazine should look but struggled with producing ideas my own magazine. So, from creating this mood board it helped me generate different ideas in making my magazine look effective and suitable for my target audience.

These are the template layouts that I have thought of for my front cover, contents page and double page spread. I have included the conventions that are used within magazines. I will have my pages bright and full of colours to attract the eyes of the readers and portray the Pop genre. From my target audience research, I found that the artist who features attracts the attention from the readers the most. Therefore, I will have an image of the artist on the front cover, filling up most of the page and have images of the artist throughout the other pages.
task 12- feature article
For this task, I was asked to write the feature article that I will be using in my magazine double page spread. I only had a couple of ideas abut what I wanted to write the article about. However, I knew that the magazine would benefit from having the article about the featuring artist. Therefore, I decided to do an article on an interview on my artist while they were on tour.
This is a draft of my double page spread with the article. However, I decided to use this layout and article for my final product as I feel it related to the genre of Pop and as the article is gossipy and more informal, which would appeal more to my target audience. Although, when creating my final product I included another image in the background of the text as I thought one image of the artist on the page would make the article look boring and plain.

task 13- photo shoot
In this task, I had to do a photoshoot of my artist that I will be using in my magazine. I had to take the photographs in the locations that I have previously spoken about in task 8. I finally chose to do my photoshoot on a white, plain wall as I thought it would be more effective and will help the artist stand out more from the background.
To give me some ideas and inspiration about how I should exhibit my photoshoot I decided to make another mood board using images from real media. I created the mood board to represent different ways of which poses and positions my artist could stand while doing the shoot. From doing this, I found that many of the front cover images feature the artist as a medium shot and sometimes close up or a long shot. This helped me develop my ideas for my photoshoot and understand how to show my artist so ti is eye-catching and appeals to my audience.

These are the images I got from my photoshoot. I decided to do a variety of different poses of my artists so I had a many ideas and ways of showing my artist. I took the photographs on a Cannon camera as I wanted them to look clear and professional.
task 14- magazine name and fonts
In this task, I had to design the font I will use and what I will name my magazine. To give me some help I created a mood board of different magazine titles and Pop artists, to see the type of fonts that are used within the genre. From doing this, I got a better understanding on the different fonts that are used within the Pop genre and on music magazines. The fonts I found are all bold and stand out, which would mean I need to make sure my magazine title will need to be similar to my mood board.
After I made my mood board, I thought of what I could name my magazine and I came across the name ‘Noise’, which I knew straight away would be perfect for my magazine. I chose the name ‘Noise’ because it is short, snappy, rememberable and grabs the readers attention. Once I came up with the name, I gathered my ideas on how I would like my title to be presented. By presenting it in 8 different ways, I was able to pick my favourite as I could easily compare them. The font I chose to use was from a website called ‘dafont.com’ which gave many options to choose from.
I chose this font as I thought it looks different to any other magazine title, helping catch the attention of the readers. It is also very easy to read and clear, I liked that there are sections on each of the lettering. This allowed me to adapt and change the title, I done this by incorporating different colours into the title and portray the genre of Pop.
